Oak Ridge Laboratory is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory. As part of a green tech initiative, The Oak Ridge Laboratory had recently undergone a major overhaul of its boiler system. Once deployed, the system based on next generation technology experienced problems which made regulating steam in the facility difficult. As a result, the system needed to be heavily modified to allow for more efficient regulation of steam to ensure a productive and efficient environment. The customer needed rapid delivery from an industrial services contractor that could rapidly convert the boiler system to natural gas while leveraging as much of the existing system as possible. It was also critical that the contractor be able to manage all of the trades and take ownership of the project from an engineering standpoint, cultural standpoint, and project management perspective.

FM Sylvan leveraged its expertise in boiler erection and repair to successfully deploy new gas boilers at Oak Ridge. By quickly mobilizing and efficiently coordinating procurement and the various trades--including electrical, demo, pipefitters and civil trades, FM Sylvan was able to meet the strict budget and timeline constraints of the project. The demolition was performed carefully to maximize the retention of existing system elements, reducing the overall project cost.
Oak Ridge was quickly returned to operating standards, allowing the Laboratory’s critical investigative research into compelling problems in energy and security to continue in an efficient, controlled, and comfortable environment. FM Sylvan’s strong financial management, procurement services, project management, and engineering competencies accelerated the project while minimizing the downside associated with orignal boiler solution.
